Point‑of‑Care Renal Ultrasound

A point‑of‑care renal ultrasound is a quick bedside scan used to look at your kidneys and bladder. It helps your doctor assess kidney size, structure, and whether there is any blockage or swelling.

Why this scan is done
Your doctor may use POCUS to check for:
  • Kidney swelling (hydronephrosis)
  • Kidney stones
  • Bladder fullness or urinary retention
  • Changes in kidney size
  • Fluid around the kidneys
It provides immediate information to guide your care.

What to expect
  • The scan is done in the clinic or at your bedside.
  • You will lie on your back or side.
  • Gel is applied to your skin, and a small handheld probe is moved over your abdomen and flanks.
  • The scan is painless and usually takes 5–10 minutes.
  • There is no radiation.

Preparation
  • No special preparation is needed.
  • If possible, try to arrive with a comfortably full bladder, as this can improve the images.

After the scan
  • You can resume normal activities immediately.
  • Your doctor will discuss the findings with you straight away or at your appointment.

Limitations
POCUS provides rapid, focused information but does not replace a full formal ultrasound when detailed imaging is required.
